Rehumanize International is seeking original creative works for the 2nd edition of Create | Encounter.

We are looking for submissions in all of the following creative formats:

  • Poetry (structured, verse, slam poetry, experimental)

  • Fiction (short stories, flash fiction, vignettes, experimental)

  • Creative Nonfiction (personal essay, narrative, travel piece, profile)

  • Screenplay/Script/Monologue

  • Visual Art (sketches, paintings, comics)

  • Photography

  • Short Film/Video

  • Music (any genre)


that explore subjects of aggressive violence against human life, dehumanization, rehumanization, and human dignity surrounding issues such as:


  • Abortion

  • Abuse (domestic, assault, rape)

  • Capital Punishment

  • Embryonic Stem-Cell Research

  • Euthanasia

  • Human Trafficking

  • Physician Assisted Suicide

  • Poverty Issues

  • Racism

  • Suicide

  • Torture

  • Unjust War

Our goal is to curate a well-rounded representation of life issues in a variety of mediums.

***Pieces do not need explicitly to address the Consistent Life Ethic,

but they cannot contradict the Consistent Life Ethic.***

***Please follow our submission guidelines. They have been updated since last year. Any pieces that do not follow the guidlines will be automatically disqualified.***

Formatting Guidelines:

  • Submits all works to with the subject line: Create | Encounter

    • All writing pieces must be in a word document with their title bolded.

    • All visual art and photography must either scanned into a PDF or submitted as a high resolution jpeg or png. Please save their titles as file names.

    • All videos and music must be uploaded onto either Vimeo or YouTube. Email the link.

  • Do not include your name on work. Please include your name, phone number, email address, and mailing address in the body of the email.

***Please include a 2-5 sentence artist statement in the body of your email that explains the purpose and theme behind your work. Also, include if there is a certain way you would like us to read or view your work.


Submission Limits:

*** We accept simultaneous and multiple submissions. Please inform us immediately is your work is accepted elsewhere.

  • For poetry, send no more than 30 lines. We welcome poetry in all forms, but please pay attention to language and detail.

  • For creative nonfiction prose, fiction, etc., please send no more than 3,000 words. Again, we are open to experimental pieces, but please attend to cohesion of idea or intent.

  • For music and short films/videos, please do not exceed 3 minutes.

  • For art and photography, we will accept individual images, a series of images or a collage of images.

    • For all visual works, we welcome striking pieces, but will not accept explicitly graphic images.

 ***For works larger or longer than these limits, please submit a cohesive excerpt and link us to the longer version for possible online publication.


All submitted pieces are considered for special recognition in the form of being published in print and/or online.

  • 1st and 2nd place works of the following categories will receive free admission to the Rehumanize Conference the weekend of October 12-14 in Pittsburgh, PA and a copy of the print publication. They will be invited to perform/display their piece at Create I Encounter’s release party the weekend of the conference:

    • Poetry

    • Fiction/NonFiction/Prose

    • Music

    • Visual Arts (1st place winner will be the cover of the print publication)

    • Video Multimedia
