Honorable Mention: Song for the Unsung

October 22, 2017

What about those without a song –
whose long journey begins
                                      slow,
                                      pianissimo,
with no grand arias or lyrical tunes
& all too soon they are voiceless,
have to sit at the back,
            sleep in the damp,
            corralled in a camp.

Be patient through days
            and years,
            their fears non-valued
join lines that inch on and on
            into zones not homes.
            are addressed in harsh tones
their voices lost
turned to dust,
            valued less than the froth
            on expensive coffee.

Why is there not a hymn
for carers, copers, cleaners?
Who work late resigned to their fate
high in office blocks
                         searching for blue sky
                         a place for a lullaby
the chance to join a choir
where each story is heard...
                                      every word
not used as the butt of ranting reproofs,
to be slurred
or tossed into litter filled streets,
like pages of accumulated grief
              lost at the edge,
stuck in the hedges of wastleland
where couches weep foam
and a blackbird sings alone.
